August 12, 1988- Jean-Michel Basquiat Dies

 

Jean-Michel Basquiat died on August 12, 1988 in New York City. Basquiat was born on December 22, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York. He first attracted attention for his graffiti under the name “SAMO” in New York City.Basquiat, son of a Haitian father and Puerto Rican-American mother, began spray-painting walls in Lower Manhattan in the late 1970’s. A few years later he became a leading exponent of the Neo-Expressionism movement that flourished in the 1980’s. He collaborated with Andy Warhol in the mid 1980’s, which resulted in a show of their work.

Jean-Michel Basquiat recently had one his works break the all time record price for a painting sold at auction. The painting is going by the name “Untitled” was painted in 1982. Basquiat’s eight year long career made him one of the shortest lived, most successful artist of the 20th century. ‘Untitled’ set the record for most expensive painting ever bought at an auction on May 18, 2017. “Untitled” also became the first painting or work made after 1980 to sell for over $100 million.

A Japanese buyer named Yusaku Maezawa bought the painting. Maezawa, an e-commerce tycoon plans to loan the painting out around the world before making it the centerpiece of his museum in his hometown of Chiba
