Cyclist Collides with Car on Grand Street

A cyclist collided with a car at the southwest corner of Grand and Jackson Streets at about 12:45pm today. Police and paramedics were on the scene within minutes, and the injured cyclist was taken away in what appeared to be stable condition on a stretcher.

According to the driver and witnesses, the cyclist was peddling onto Grand Street from Henry Street against the light, when the driver of a black Chevy was attempting a left hand turn from Jackson Street.

Despite the city’s Vision Zero program, cyclist deaths have actually increased 25% between June of 2015 and June of 2016, according to a 2016 Mayor’s Management Report [PDF].

The city also conducted a study on crashes involving cars making left turns which found that left turns cause more than twice as many pedestrian and cyclist fatalities as right turns.

We will update the story when more information becomes available.
